UCLA Plasma Simulation Group

Opportunities

We are always interested in hearing from people who want to combine plasma physics, large-scale simulation and AI/ML. See our research and software for what we work on.

Open positions

There are no positions advertised at the moment, but we welcome inquiries from prospective students, postdocs and visitors at any time.

Graduate students

Our PhD students are admitted through the UCLA graduate programs in Physics & Astronomy or in Electrical & Computer Engineering. Apply to either program and mention the group in your statement of purpose.

You are welcome to email us before or after you apply, with your CV and a few sentences on what interests you. Current UCLA graduate students looking for a research group are encouraged to get in touch directly.

Postdoctoral researchers

Open postdoctoral positions are listed above when we have them. We are also happy to hear from candidates who would like to apply for an independent fellowship to work with us.

Send a CV, a short statement of research interests and the names of two or three references.

Undergraduates

UCLA undergraduates interested in a research project in plasma simulation or machine learning for plasma physics are welcome to contact us. Tell us about your background, your programming experience and what you would like to work on.

Visitors

We regularly host visiting students and researchers working on related problems or with our codes. If you would like to visit, write to us with what you would like to work on and the dates you have in mind.

Useful background

  • A strong foundation in physics, applied mathematics or engineering. Prior plasma physics is helpful but not required.
  • Programming experience, for example in Python, Fortran, C/C++ or CUDA, and an interest in high-performance computing.
  • For our AI/ML work, familiarity with machine learning and frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX.
